Chevrolet signed a 7 year sponsorship contract with UK, soccer club, Manchester United.

Kinja'd!!!

But, with Opel replacing Chevrolet in Europe, putting Opel's logo, on United jerseys, will be a marketing mistake. Why? Because Opel is sold as Vauxhall in Britain and as Buick in various markets around the world. GM gave all that money to Man. U., hoping that it will win many buyers from China, where United is even more popular than it is in England.

But you try to explain Asians, what the hell is an Opel.

Because of that, GM could replace Chevrolet, with Cadillac, as Man U sponsor. Cadillac will be the only global brand GM will have left. Maybe, that way, they will sell more than 100 cars a year, in Europe.

Considering that Manchester United is an UK team first, a European team second and a global team third, using a brand that's available in the UK and certainly in Europe would make the most sense. Cadillac could work in the future, but not now. Does Cadillac even offer the ATS in Europe yet? Any diesels or wagons? Any frugal base gasoline engines (the 2.0T is too powerful and thirsty as a base engine)?

Cadillac has clear potential, but with the current lineup and drive trains using Cadillac as the sponsor for Manchester United would be pissing away money in the home market and home continent of MU.

IF GM wants to invest in Cadillac for the EU market it could work, but I think they're better off with keeping it Chevrolet for at least half a year.

Saw a bunch of cars in Hong Kong with the ManUtd badge on every panel. As a Liverpool fan, often felt the urge to puke through the sunroof. I don't understand displaying sports/political allegiances on your car, there's always going to be some drunk with a different opinion passing by and wanting to fuck with it at some point. Anyway, as Utd are the default team for people that don't actually know or care much about football this suggests Chevy want to pitch their cars at people that don't care about cars... ;)

I don't know what trims is Cadillac offering in the EU, you tell me.

And the United fan club in China, is probably larger than UK's entire population. Not to mention that non British, Europeans don't really care about soccer sponsorships, when buying a new car. And being the only global brand, Cadillac needs to become the best of GM, and that means that people need to see Cadillac logos, everywhere.
